No more toll at Salak Jaya
KUALA LUMPUR: The toll charge at Salak Jaya on the Sungai Besi Expressway was abolished yesterday.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed, who officiated at the closing of the toll plaza, said a new 12.3km extension to the highway, costing RM650 million, would be built in three years.
Zin said: "The toll collection here was supposed to be abolished on March 1, but Besraya (M) Sdn Bhd agreed to do it four days earlier.
"Some 50,000 road users will benefit from this."
Also present were three Pakatan Rakyat MPs -- Fong Kui Lun, Teresa Kok and Tan Kok Wai.
Highway users need no longer pay the toll charge of RM1.30, charged by the toll concessionaire since May 1999.
However, north-bound users of the Sungai Besi Expressway into Kuala Lumpur will still pay RM1.30 at The Mines Toll Plaza.
Zin said the decision to abolish the toll charge was made by the cabinet.
This showed the government's commitment towards reducing the burden on middle and low-income workers in the Klang Valley.
Zin said this would also reduce traffic jams in Kuchai Lama and Pekan Salak Selatan caused by road users seeking to avoid paying the toll.
Taman Salak Selatan and Kampung Baru Selatan, which were divided by the toll plaza, would be rejoined.
Zin announced the plan to build a 12.3km extension to the existing 16.6km- long Sungai Besi Expressway.
The extension, to be managed by Besraya, would be called the Besraya Eastern Extension.
A toll collection booth would be set up along the yet-to-be-built stretch at Loke Yew. The charge has yet to be decided.
