THE current cohort of students studying Mathematics and Science in English can continue to do so until they finish their secondary school.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said although the reversal of the policy, known as PPSMI, was to be fully executed in 2012, the deadline would be extended to 2014 for this group.
The cabinet’s decision on this was to allay concerns by parents fearing that their children would be adversely affected by the policy reversion.
“The government has agreed to this as there were concerns about students who started studying the two subjects in English and would be in Years Four to Six, and Forms Four and Five when the new policy is implemented in 2012,” he told the Malaysian media on the last day of his working trip here yesterday.
Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said students who had started learning the two subjects in English would not only be able to continue being taught in English, but also have the choice of answering their exam questions in either English or Bahasa Malaysia.
“This is what I meant by ‘soft landing’ (in the PPSMI policy reversal). Students will be given time to get used to the new policy.”
The reversal in policy will see Year One and Four as well as Form One and Four students studying the two subjects in Bahasa Malaysia from 2012.
Those in vernacular schools will be taught in their mother tongue.
The PPSMI was implemented in phases, beginning with Year One, Form One and Lower Six students in 2003.

Re: Teaching of Maths and Science in English extended to 2014
I guess the ministry of education was very quite for sometime. So they're just bringing up this issues to show that they're also doin some work.
I reallly feel pitty for the malaysians who come here to study, they hav so much of problems when it comes to listening to how the british speak here. The pronounsations of the malaysians r all so wrong. Well let them kill the language for the malaysians n make our country even worst in educational standards.
